27 Why do you say, O Jacob,
    and speak, O Israel,
“My way is hidden from the Lord,
    and my right is disregarded by my God”?
28 Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
    the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He does not faint or grow weary;
    his understanding is unsearchable.
29 He gives power to the faint,
    and to him who has no might he increases strength.
30 Even youths shall faint and be weary,
    and young men shall fall exhausted;
31 but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
    they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary;
    they shall walk and not faint. – Isaiah 40:27-31 ESV

YHWHbārā’ – “The LORD the Creator.” This name of God paints a powerful image that is intended to provide the covenant people of Israel with comfort and security. Yahweh is the Creator God who “created the ends of the earth.” That phrase is a merism, a rhetorical term for a pair of contrasting words or phrases (such as near and far, body and soul, life and death) used to express totality or completeness. Isaiah is saying that God is the creator of the whole earth. He made it all. He also reminds them that their God “sits above the circle of the earth,” (Isaiah 40:22 NLT). He is above and beyond, the transcendent God who looks down on all He has made. From His lofty vantage point, God sees man, whom He made in His own image as little more than grasshoppers in His sight. This is not a statement meant to deny the value of humanity but to stress the immense difference between the Creator and the creation.

To further enhance his point, Isaiah cleverly reverses the vantage point and challenges the “grasshoppers” to look up at the night sky.

Look up into the heavens.
    Who created all the stars?
He brings them out like an army, one after another,
    calling each by its name.
Because of his great power and incomparable strength,
    not a single one is missing. – Isaiah 40:26 NLT

The stars in their vast numbers appear like a celestial army in the sky. There are too many to count and yet Yahweh made them all and knows them by name. He not only made them but He maintains them. Yahweh the Creator is powerful and incomparable in strength.

This entire chapter is meant to provide comfort and assurance to the people of God. It begins with the words, “Comfort, comfort my people, says your God” (Isaiah 40:1 ESV). He has instructed Isaiah to bring good news to the people of Israel

“Speak tenderly to Jerusalem.
Tell her that her sad days are gone
    and her sins are pardoned.
Yes, the Lord has punished her twice over
    for all her sins.” – Isaiah 40:2 NLT

God had punished the nation of Israel for its sin and rebellion. The northern kingdom of Israel had already fallen to the Assyrians hundreds of years earlier and the southern kingdom of Israel was about to fall to the Babylonians, which would result in the deportment of tens of thousands of its citizens.

But before the inevitable happened, Yahweh assured them that His covenant love would continue; He would not abandon them. Things were going to get bad but there was good news on the horizon because “the word of our God stands forever.” (Isaiah 40:8 NLT). Yahweh is not only the Creator-God, He is the covenant-keeping God. He had made promises to Israel and He was going to keep them. That is why Isaiah is instructed to declare:

“Your God is coming!”
Yes, the Sovereign Lord is coming in power.
    He will rule with a powerful arm.
    See, he brings his reward with him as he comes.
He will feed his flock like a shepherd.
    He will carry the lambs in his arms,
holding them close to his heart.
    He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young. 
– Isaiah 40:9-11 NLT

What makes this promise so powerful is its basis in God’s creative nature. Not only were the Israelites descendants of Adam, whom God had formed from the dust of the ground (Genesis 2:7) but they were the descendants of Abraham, the pagan, idol-worshiping Gentile from Ur of the Chaldeas. Yahweh had literally ”formed” the nation of Israel from an old man and his equally elderly wife who just happened to be barren. When Yahweh called Abraham, He promised to transform an elderly barren couple into a mighty nation.

“Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” – Genesis 12:1-3 ESV

Yahweh made a covenant with Abraham and He kept it. The descendants of Abraham became a mighty nation and filled the land of Canaan that God had promised to give Abraham as his inheritance (Genesis 17:1-8). For hundreds of years, they enjoyed the fruits of the Promised Land. But they had repeatedly rebelled against God, violating their covenant commitments and giving their affections to the false gods of the Canaanites. For this, God punished them. But now He was promising to restore them.

For the Israelites facing the imminent fall of their nation and their own exile into captivity, Isaiah’s words sounded like empty promises. So, he backed them up with visual references to Yahweh’s creative power.

Who else has held the oceans in his hand?
    Who has measured off the heavens with his fingers?
Who else knows the weight of the earth
    or has weighed the mountains and hills on a scale? – Isaiah 40:12 NLT

But he also stressed Yahweh’s unparalleled wisdom.

Who is able to advise the Spirit of the Lord?
    Who knows enough to give him advice or teach him?
Has the Lord ever needed anyone’s advice?
    Does he need instruction about what is good?
Did someone teach him what is right
    or show him the path of justice? – Isaiah 40:13-14 NLT

Then, to top it all off, Isaiah emphasized Yahweh’s His sovereign control over all things, including the nations of the earth.

No, for all the nations of the world
    are but a drop in the bucket.
They are nothing more
    than dust on the scales.
He picks up the whole earth
    as though it were a grain of sand. – Isaiah 40:15 NLT

He judges the great people of the world
    and brings them all to nothing.
They hardly get started, barely taking root,
    when he blows on them and they wither.
    The wind carries them off like chaff. – Isaiah 40:23-24 NLT

Their God was beyond powerful and fully capable of caring for all their needs and remedying all their problems. He would show up and never give up until each of His promises for them was fulfilled. They could count on Yahweh because He is “the eternal God” who “never grows weak or weary” (Isaiah 40:28 NLT). They would go into exile but He would be around when it was time for them to return and He would make it happen – because He is Jehovah-Bara, the Lord the Creator.

Isaiah’s final word on the matter stresses Yahweh’s capacity to create what is needed for the moment. He created the universe out of nothing, so He could create power, strength, and resilience for His suffering people just when they needed it.

He gives power to the weak
    and strength to the powerless.
Even youths will become weak and tired,
    and young men will fall in exhaustion.
But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.
    They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
    They will walk and not faint. – Isaiah 40:29-31 NLT

They could trust in Yahweh’s power to bārā’ (create). They would not need to bring their own strength, He would provide it. They would not be required to muster up the energy, He would supply His own. Jehovah-bārā’ is able to meet all their needs. He is the same God who “created [bārā’] the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1 ESV). He is the same God who “created [bārā’] the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind” (Genesis 1:21 ESV). And He is the same God who “created [bārā’] man in his own image, in the image of God he created [bārā’] him; male and female he created [bārā’] them” (Genesis 1:27 ESV).

Have you never heard?
    Have you never understood?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
    the Creator of all the earth.
He never grows weak or weary. – Isaiah 40:28 NLT

Jehovah-Bara stands ready to create on behalf of His people; to shape, fashion, and form, just as He did heaven and earth – out of nothing. The same Jehovah-Bara who created man can also create new conditions and circumstances. He is also the creator of transformations, just as the apostle Paul reminds us.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. – 2 Corinthians 5:17 ESV

But Jehovah-Bara is not done. There is one more act of creation that will complete His redemptive plan for mankind and the entire universe. The apostle John describes it in the Book of Revelation. In the closing chapter of that book, he describes a vision he received from the Lord.

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. – Revelation 21:1-2 NLT

Jehovah-Bara will recreate heaven and earth but He will also unveil the New Jerusalem, the city that will become the home of God’s chosen for all eternity. Then John records the following declaration from the throne of God in heaven:

“Look, God’s home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them.” – Revelation 21:3 NLT

To wrap up this incredible vision, John reports Jehovah-Bara’s promise regarding His final act of creation.

And the one sitting on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new!” And then he said to me, “Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true.” And he also said, “It is finished! I am the Alpha and the Omega—the Beginning and the End. To all who are thirsty I will give freely from the springs of the water of life. All who are victorious will inherit all these blessings, and I will be their God, and they will be my children.” – Revelation 21:5-7 NLT

Jehovah-Bara lives among His people, using His vast creative powers to transform hearts, minds, and circumstances. He regularly renews our minds through the power of His Word. At salvation, He places a new heart within us. He turns the darkness of our lives into light. He produces life from death. He removes our sins as far as the East is from the West and replaces them with the righteousness of Christ. And one day, He will make all things new, replacing this temporal, sin-marred, and fading world with His eternal Kingdom.

1 Then he led me to the gate, the gate facing east. And behold, the glory of the God of Israel was coming from the east. And the sound of his coming was like the sound of many waters, and the earth shone with his glory. And the vision I saw was just like the vision that I had seen when he came to destroy the city, and just like the vision that I had seen by the Chebar canal. And I fell on my face. As the glory of the Lord entered the temple by the gate facing east, the Spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner court; and behold, the glory of the Lord filled the temple.– Ezekiel 43:1-5 ESV

YHWHšāmmāh – “The LORD is There.” The closing chapters of the Book of Ezekiel contain God’s promise of a restored nation of Israel in a revived kingdom complete with a new-and-improved Temple. This eschatological glimpse into Israel’s future was intended to provide hope and remind Ezekiel’s original audience of God’s faithfulness.

Ezekiel began his prophetic ministry while living as an exile in Babylon. A former priest, Ezekiel was part of the 10,000 Jews sent to Babylon as captives during Nebuchadnezzar’s second deportation of Jerusalemites in 597 B.C.  (2 Kings 24:12-17). During his exile, Ezekiel received a vision that portrayed the glory of Yahweh in a strange and bewildering manner. The vision was a spectacular sight and contained visual imagery difficult for Ezekiel to comprehend. But he knew he had seen the LORD, Yahweh.

Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard the voice of one speaking. – Ezekiel 1:

The vision was accompanied by a message from Yahweh, providing Ezekiel with a commission to serve as His spokesman.

“Son of man, I send you to the people of Israel, to nations of rebels, who have rebelled against me. They and their fathers have transgressed against me to this very day. The descendants also are impudent and stubborn: I send you to them, and you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God.’” – Ezekiel 2:3-4 ESV

As part of his vision, Ezekiel was provided with a scroll that “had writing on the front and on the back, and there were written on it words of lamentation and mourning and woe” (Ezekiel 2:10 ESV). Ezekiel was commanded to consume the scroll and regurgitate its content to “a rebellious house” (Ezekiel 3:9 ESV) with “a hard forehead and a stubborn heart” (Ezekiel 3:7 ESV). 

Ezekiel was warned that his message would not be well-received and that his efforts among the exiled people of Israel would prove fruitless. But despite the less-than-encouraging nature of his assignment, Ezekiel was assured that the vision and message had come from Yahweh Himself. He heard a sound like an earthquake and a voice thundering from heaven.

“Blessed be the glory of the LORD (Yᵊhōvâ) from its place!” – Ezekiel 3:12 ESV

Yahweh had spoken. But it is important to note that, at this point in the story, Yahweh remains in His “place.” He has visited Ezekiel in a vision but has not come to dwell among His exiled people. But fast-forward to the end of the book and Yahweh provides Ezekiel with a much-different vision of a much-improved future when He will dwell among His restored people in a reconstituted kingdom.

It begins in chapter 40, where Ezekiel receives another vision. On this occasion, he is transported back to Judah and placed on a high peak where he can view the city of Jerusalem spread out before him. But what he sees is dramatically different than the disheveled pile of rubble the Babylonians had left behind. Ezekiel is taken on a guided tour of the city, beginning with the newly restored Temple. Everything is immaculate and perfect. No detail has been overlooked. What the Babylonians destroyed, God has restored. But there is one thing missing: Yahweh’s glory. The city has been restored and the Temple has been rebuilt, but it all means nothing without the presence of Yahweh. In his vision, Ezekiel is privileged to see the glory of Yahweh return, accompanied by a reassuring message of hope.

“Son of man, this is the place of my throne and the place of the soles of my feet, where I will dwell in the midst of the people of Israel forever.” – Ezekiel 43:7 ESV

In the remaining chapters of his book, Ezekiel describes the nature of this new kingdom in which Yahweh will dwell with His people. Ezekiel is given a detailed layout of the tribal allotment within the Millennial Kingdom. Beginning in the north and working his way down, he describes God’s plan for the geographical arrangement of the 12 tribes. Each tribe will occupy a portion of the land of promise that extends from the Mediterranean Sea in the west to the Jordan River in the east. The tribes of Issachar, Zebulun, and Gad will have the “Brook of Egypt” as their western border. Unlike the division of the land under Joshua, the Millennial Kingdom will allot equal portions of real estate to each of the tribes. When Moses had set aside the land for the people of Israel, he had done so based on the population size of each tribe. But in the Millennial Kingdom, the land distribution will be based on a different criteria. Rather than size, it appears to be based on faithfulness.

In examining the north-to-south allotment of the land, it becomes clear that there is an intended progression to the order. Dan, one of the most unfaithful tribes, will find itself located in the far north of the land.  The tribe of Gad will bookend the land from its location in the south. It’s interesting to note that the four sons born to Jacob’s concubines (Dan, Asher, Naphtali, and Gad) all occupy land on the extreme edges of the Kingdom. Yet Judah and Benjamin are located on either side of the holy district, the site of the Millennial Temple. These were the two tribes that made up the southern kingdom of Judah after God split Solomon’s kingdom in two. During the days of the divided kingdom, the tribes of Judah and Benjamin displayed the greatest degree of faithfulness to Yahweh and yielded the largest number of godly kings. Their reward for their faithfulness will be in the form of land allotments on either side of the holy district. The rest of the sons born to Jacob’s two wives, Leah and Rachel, will occupy land toward the center of the kingdom.

Proximity to the Millennial Temple seems to be the point in all of this because that is where God’s presence will dwell. Ezekiel saw the vision of God’s glory reentering the new temple and taking up residence in the Most Holy Place (Ezekiel 43:4). The Millennial Temple will sit within the holy city, and Ezekiel describes this future Jerusalem (Zechariah 14:8) as being six miles in circumference. It will have 12 gates, three on each side, dedicated to the 12 tribes of Israel.

His description of the city and its gates mirrors the one given by the apostle John in the book of Revelation. But John was describing the New Jerusalem.

And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great, high mountain, and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. It had a great, high wall, with twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and on the gates the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel were inscribed— on the east three gates, on the north three gates, on the south three gates, and on the west three gates. – Revelation 21:10-13 ESV

He was not describing the Jerusalem of the Millennial Kingdom, but yet another iteration of the holy city that will appear at the end of the millennial age when God makes all things new (Revelation 21:5). This New Jerusalem will have 12 gates named after the 12 tribes of Israel, but it will also feature 12 foundations, dedicated to the 12 apostles.

And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. – Revelation 21:14 ESV

The greatest difference between these two versions of the city of Jerusalem appears to be the timing of their appearance. The Jerusalem that will exist during the Millennial Kingdom will feature a Temple and a reinstated sacrificial system. The city will be occupied by both Jews and Gentiles, but not all will be Christ followers. In the New Jerusalem, the occupants will be from every tribe, nation, and tongue, and share a common faith in Christ. It will be filled with the elect of God from all eras, including both Jews and Gentiles.

The Millennial Kingdom is dedicated to the nation of Israel, the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Its very existence culminates God’s covenant promises to the patriarchs and fulfills every commitment He made to them. But that kingdom will come to an end and be replaced by the New Jerusalem and the eternal state, and at that time, “it will be ‘true’ Israel—those who have trusted in Jesus Christ—that will enter the gates of the Kingdom of Heaven. It is through the twelve gates of the New Jerusalem that the true tribal people—believers of Jewish descent as well as Gentiles who have been ‘grafted in’ with God’s people (Romans 11:17–25)—will enter the joy of the Lord (see Matthew 25:21). But there is one important factor that both Jerusalems have in common: The presence of Yahweh. John describes his vision of the New Jerusalem descending out of heaven.

I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” – Revelation 21:1-4 ESV

The dwelling place of God will be with man. He will dwell with them. God himself will be with them as their God. There is a promise of permanence in this passage. God will come to live among His people – on earth. Our final destination is not heaven, but earth. All the redeemed will live in perfect unity with God the Father and God the Son – for all eternity. And in this future Jerusalem, there will be no temple.

And I saw no temple in the city, for its temple is the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb. And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb. By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it – Revelation 21:22-24 ESV

But the Jerusalem of the Millennial Kingdom, with its glorious Temple, filled with Yahweh’s glory, will also enjoy His presence. In fact, the very name of the main gate that will lead into this future city is Jehovah-Shammah: The Lord Is There” (Ezekiel 48:35 ESV).

The book of Ezekiel has finally come to an end. It has been 22 years since Ezekiel first saw his vision of God and received his commission as God’s prophet to the people of Judah. His ministry began with an unbelievable glimpse of the glory of God. He was given a word to deliver from the very mouth of God, predicting the coming siege of Jerusalem, the destruction of the temple, and the deportation of the people of Judah to Babylon. In chapter ten, Ezekiel is shown the real tragedy of it all – the glory of God departing the temple. The very presence and power of God were removed from the midst of the people due to their sin and rebellion. But two decades later, God gave Ezekiel another vision of a rebuilt temple, a restored Jerusalem, and a revived relationship with the people of God.

The book of Ezekiel ends with the city of Jerusalem referred to by the name, “The Lord Is There.” It is a statement of God’s faithfulness and a reminder of His desire to live among His people. The abiding presence of God is a powerful image with which to sum up this book. While God had to punish His people for their sins, He never abandoned them completely. He remained faithful and committed to His plan for them. Even while they were in exile, He sent His prophets to communicate His message to them. And ultimately, God returned them to the land. But there is a day when God will complete His plan for the people of Israel and fully fulfill His promises to them. He will once again make His place among them so that the city of Jerusalem can truly be called “Jehovah-Shammah, The Lord Is There.”

The Dwelling Place of God.

Daniel 9-10, Revelation 21

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God.” – Revelation 21:3 ESV

Daniel and his contemporaries had been in captivity in Babylon for nearly 68 years. He was probably in his 80s at the time these two chapters were written, and had spent the majority of his life living in exile, away from the city of God, and unable to worship in the temple of God. When Nebuchadnezzar had conquered Jerusalem in 586 B.C, he had completely destroyed the temple, the dwelling place of God. So since that time there had been no place for the people of Israel to go in which they might worship and offer sacrifices to their God. For almost 70 years, the people of Israel had endured exile and had lived with the awareness that their great temple lay in ruins. But by the time Daniel received his vision recorded in chapter 10, a group of Jews had been able to return to Jerusalem and had begun the restoration of the city of Jerusalem and the rebuilding of the temple – all by virtue of a decree issued by King Cyrus. God had miraculously provided a means by which His people would be returned to the land and the city of Jerusalem could be rebuilt – all in keeping with His promise. But the real emphasis in these two chapters seems to be the presence of God. In spite of the fact that Daniel lived in a foreign land, far away from the city of Jerusalem and the temple where God’s presence was supposed to have dwelt, He received word from God Himself. When he prayed to God, He answered. “At the beginning of your pleas for mercy a word went out, and I have come to tell it to you, for you are greatly loved. Therefore consider the word and understand the vision” (Daniel 9:23 ESV). God then proceeded to give Daniel a glimpse into the future as it related to the people of Israel. He provided Daniel with the assurance of His ongoing presence and unwavering commitment to His people – the Jews. God told Daniel, “O man greatly loved, fear not, peace be with you; be strong and of good courage” (Daniel 10:19 ESV).

What does this passage reveal about God?

Much of what God shared with Daniel regarding the future of Israel was confusing and disturbing. He received news of “a troubled time” in which “desolations are decreed.” He heard about floods and war, abominations and destruction of the city of God. But Daniel also received encouragement. He was told not to fear. He was given news from God Himself, providing him with a reassurance that everything was going to be okay. God was working behind the scenes, orchestrating the affairs of men and implementing His divine plan, according to His perfect timeline. God sent an angel to Daniel who told him that he “came to make you understand what is to happen to your people in the latter days. For the vision is for days yet to come” (Daniel 10:14 ESV). God was sharing with Daniel news about the future. He was reminding that He had not forsaken His people. He had seen Daniel and had been aware of His mourning. He had heard Daniel and responded to His cries for mercy. God was not restricted to heaven or relegated to a temple built by human hands. He was the transcendent God who omnipresent, able to be everywhere at once and capable of being with His people wherever they were at any moment and at any time. He is not hindered by time or space. And in spite of the sins of the people of Israel, He was still with them and would one day restore them to a right relationship with Him.    

What does this passage reveal about man?

Man’s greatest need is God. And yet our greatest weakness seems to be our insatiable desire to try and live without Him or simply in place of Him. When Adam and Eve were created, they enjoyed unbroken fellowship and intimacy with God. But sin changed all that. They went from having unrestricted access to God to being physically removed from His presence and denied entrance into the garden where they once walked and talked with Him. The story of the Bible is about God’s plan to make right what sin destroyed. Sin marred the world. So God is going to make it new again. “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away” (Revelation 21:1 ESV). He will start fresh. He will recreate. He will even make a new Jerusalem. “And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband” (Revelation 21:2 ESV). When the remnant of Jews returned to Jerusalem during the days of Daniel, they were able to rebuild the temple, but the finished product was a shadow of its former glory. It was nothing like the once-glorious temple that Solomon had built. Because man cannot restore like God can restore. Man can’t fix what is wrong in the world. Everything we do is little more than a band-aid on a problem that requires extensive restoration and healing. Even Daniel understood that his people were helpless to fix the problem they were experiencing. Their own sins had gotten them where they were. But God had not abandoned them. He was still among them. And He was always giving them assurances of His ongoing presence and power. But any glimpses they got of God were nothing compared to what was to come. Sin still mars God’s creation and damages man’s relationship with God. But the day is coming when those things will be remedied once and for all.

How would I apply what I’ve read to my own life?

Man was created to have a relationship with God. Sin threw a monkey wrench into the plan, driving a wedge between man and God, and requiring God to do something radical to remedy the problem. God sent His Son to pay for the sins of man and to make possible the restoration of the relationship between God and His creation. But even now, sin continues to make it difficult for man to experience God’s indwelling, ongoing presence perfectly, without interruption. So God has one last thing He needs to do. He is going to eliminate sin and its devastating influence. He will destroy Satan and remove him completely from the equation. John was told that God would “wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away” (Revelation 21:4 ESV). God reminds us, “Behold, I am making all things new” (Revelation 21:5 ESV). A new heaven and a new earth. A new Jerusalem. A new relationship between God and man. “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God” (Revelation 21:3 ESV). Over in his gospel, John writes, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth” (John 1:14 ESV). The word for “dwelt” in this verse means to “fix one’s tabernacle” and it pictures God’s choice to dwell among men in a physical form. In Revelation 21:3, John records the noun version of the same word when he writes, “the dwelling place of God is with man.” When Jesus came to earth, He made God visible to men. But the day is coming when God Himself will dwell with men once again. We will enjoy unbroken, unhindered fellowship with God. Sin will be eliminated. Confession for sin will no longer necessary. There will be nothing to get in the way of our relationship with God. He will be our God and we will be His children.

Father, on this earth we only get glimpses of what fellowship with You can be like. Sin continues to make it difficult to see You, hear You, and experience You. The world can be a constant reminder of sin’s reality and make it feel like You are distant and removed from everyday life. But the day is coming when we will experience You in uninterrupted glory. You will dwell among us and we will enjoy Your presence. Help me to stay focused on reality of that promise. Amen
